University Museums
Saratov is the city of bread, science and legends. And Vavilov University is its heart.
Here, in ancient mansions and modern lecture halls, History that you can not only see but also feel, comes to life. Three unique museums under one roof: from the personal belongings of a brilliant scientist who changed world biology, to the famous Saratov kalach is remembered from the time of the imperial court.
For foreign students, this is a chance to try the authentic Russia, to learn about its past through science, everyday life and exploits. The tours can be adapted to any level of Russian, and sometimes they are conducted in English. Admission for university students is free!

1. The Museum of Vavilov University History – a living chronicle in an old mansion.
Where: 60 Sovetskaya St. (academic building No. 2) is one of the most beautiful buildings in Saratov, built in 1905 in the eclectic style. The ballroom orchestras of the Saratov Commercial College once thundered here, and now the memory of the formation of agrarian science is preserved.
The exhibition is divided into thematic complexes:
• "Creation of a university" – how three Saratov agricultural institutes merged into one powerful university (1998). You will see rare documents, photographs of the first teachers, diplomas of graduates of the early 20th century.
• "N.I. Vavilov" is a separate section dedicated to the great scientist, his Saratov period (1917-1921) and tragic fate.
• "Educational process and science" – antique instruments, a mechanical calculating machine "Felix", herbariums, collections of soils and seeds.
• "Sports and student teams" – awards, banners, photos of construction teams and the Vega search team.
• "The Great Patriotic War" is the largest section: items of equipment, weapons found on the battlefields, letters from the front, personal belongings of student volunteers.
Unique exhibits:
• Lifetime editions of Nikolay Vavilov’s works as well as other brilliant scientists.
• Lion's Houdon anatomic figure (a rare sculpture) and other artistic treasures.
• More than 1000 anatomic models and preparations from the former zootechnical Institute.
• Documents in German, brought in 1918 from the University of Yuriev (now Tartu) – evidence of the evacuation of scientists to Saratov.

The museum actively cooperates with the international department – guided tours with simplified Russian or English translations are provided for groups of guests. Here you can both learn about the history of the university and understand how Russian science interacted with the world community even in the most difficult years.

2. Memorial study-museum of N.I. Vavilov – the place of power for the great biologist
Where: 4 P.A. Stolypin Avenue, building 3, (The University educational complex 1).
History of creation:
It was opened in 1987, to mark the 100th anniversary of the scientist. It was in this room that the laboratory of the Department of Private Agriculture and Breeding was located in 1917-1921.Vavilov began his brilliant research in the study. Here he formulated the famous "Law of Homological Series in Hereditary Variability" (1920), a discovery that revolutionized genetics and breeding.
Atmosphere and exhibits:
The office was recreated with historical accuracy – antique furniture, a desk, books, posters, tables, herbarium specimens. There are almost all of Vavilov's 400 works in the showcases, including first editions with his autographs. Among the exhibits of particular value are:
• Handwritten notes and photocopies of the scientist's letters.
• Personal belongings donated by his son Yuri Nikolayevich (PhD - Doctor of Physics and Mathematics).
• Unique collections of plants gathered during the expeditions.

3. Saratov Kalach Museum – a gastronomic legend of the Volga region
Where: on the territory of Academic complex 1 of the University (opened in 2019 with the support of the Saratov City Duma).
Why it is unique:
The Saratov kalach is the only round kind of bread in the world with a wide leg and a fluffy cap. Its recipe was kept secret, but it is known that the secret lies in a special combination of soft and hard wheat. This kind of bread does not break when compressed and restores its shape, which is why it was taken to fairs in Nizhny Novgorod and even delivered to the royal table.
